After searching for the perfect vehicle online and visiting Omaha car dealerships for test drives, you’ve finally found and financed your dream car. Now what? Once you’ve driven off the lot, here are some essential steps you shouldn’t skip.
Insure Your Car
When you purchase a vehicle in Omaha, you need to buy car insurance to keep yourself and other drivers free from liability on the road. Carefully research your insurance options to find the best plan for your needs.
Secure Your Paperwork
Aside from financing paperwork and your car’s owner manual, you’ll receive these other important documents from the dealership when you purchase your vehicle:
- The bill of sale acts as a sales receipt for your vehicle — it includes the purchase price, the seller’s name, the buyer’s name, and more. You’ll need to provide this paperwork when you register your car.
- The title may be given to you if you paid for your car in full. Otherwise, your auto loan lender will hold onto the title until your vehicle is fully paid off.
- Other documents, like documentation of the sales tax you paid on your car, may be provided depending on the state you live in. To register your new vehicle in Nebraska, you’ll need this documentation.
Register Your Car
Your dealership should provide temporary tags that allow you to drive legally while you’re registering your car. These tags expire within 30 days, so make sure to get down to the DMV as soon as is convenient. Once you’re there, you’ll need to pay a fee and provide documents like your car’s title, proof of insurance, and more.
